Follow up Appointments
- Call 205-838-3090 the day after surgery to schedule your post-op appointment
- Most procedures require a course of occupational therapy. You will be contacted by our therapy department the day after surgery to schedule this. Please leave on any post-op dressings/splints, as our therapists will remove these.
Dressing/splint care
- If you are placed in a splint during surgery or going to OT/PT afterwards, please leave on all dressings/splints until therapy. Do not get your dressing wet.
- For those not in a splint or going to therapy, you may remove your dressing 5 days post-op and place a waterproof bandage over incision site, still keeping incision clean and dry until your post-op visit for suture removal.
- If you bleed through a dressing, please do not remove this. You may reinforce it with an ACE bandage, being sure not to wrap this too tight.
Post-op swelling, pain, bruising
- Swelling, pain, and bruising are very normal after surgery. To help swelling, please elevate the surgical site above the level of your heart, especially for the first 72 hours, and ice as needed.
- Please avoid any strenuous activity following surgery to reduce the chance of any complications/increased pain and swelling.
- Please let us know if you experience any post-op fevers (temp >101 F), chills, sweats, increased drainage from surgical site, red streaks on extremity
