Ganglion Cysts

What is a Ganglion Cysts
?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that commonly develops on the wrist, hand, or fingers, usually near a joint or tendon. These cysts are noncancerous and filled with a jelly-like fluid. While they can be painless, some cysts may cause discomfort, especially if they press on a nerve or interfere with joint movement.

Symptoms of a Ganglion Cysts
:

  • A visible lump or bump, often round and soft
  • Pain or tenderness, especially with movement
  • Weakness in the affected hand if the cyst is near a tendon
  • Changes in size, with the cyst sometimes getting larger or smaller

Causes and Risk Factors:

  • Repetitive wrist or hand movements
  • Previous joint or tendon injuries
  • More common in women and individuals between 20-40 years old
  • Can be associated with arthritis, especially in the fingers

Diagnosis:

Your surgeon may diagnose a ganglion cyst through a physical exam, sometimes using imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI to confirm the diagnosis if necessary.

Treatment Options:

Non-Surgical Treatments:

  • Observation: If the cyst is painless and not interfering with movement, no treatment may be needed.
  • Immobilization: Wearing a splint or brace to reduce movement and pressure on the cyst.
  • Aspiration: Using a needle to drain the fluid, though the cyst may return.

Surgical Treatment

  • If the cyst is painful, affects function, or keeps returning, surgery may be performed to remove it.
